This is not a park for lions or elephants. Ouanoukrim Mountain is about high altitude wildlife. Barbary macaques live in the juniper and pine forests on lower slopes. Keep your distance. Barbary sheep cling to rocky cliffs, hard to spot but worth it. Red foxes and wild boars also live in the valleys. Birdlife is decent. Golden eagles soar over the ridges. Bonelli's eagles are also present. Look for Alpine choughs, black birds with red beaks that hang around high camps. Best time for wildlife viewing is spring and autumn. In summer, animals stay higher where it is cooler. In winter, they come down to lower valleys. Early morning and late afternoon are best. Bring binoculars. Birders, this place is special. You are here for high mountain birds. The golden eagle is the star, rare but present. Bonelli's eagles are around too. In valleys and rocky slopes, you will see black wheatears and black-eared wheatears bouncing around on rocks. The high ridges are also home to the horned lark and the alpine accentor. Spring and autumn are your best bets. April to June and September to October. Weather is stable with mild, clear skies. Spring valleys are green with wildflowers. Autumn air is crisp, views are clear, crowds are very thin. Summer, June to August, is hot in valleys with 30°C or more, but the high peak stays cooler. The mountain sees fewer climbers than Toubkal even in summer. Winter, November to March, is cold. Snow covers the high peak. The summit requires crampons and ice axe. Getting here takes a bit more effort than Toubkal. Ouanoukrim Mountain is also accessed from Imlil village, about 1.5 hours from Marrakech. From Marrakech, drive south on the R203 road toward Asni, then to Imlil. Paved and well-maintained, but winding in mountains. A regular car works fine. No 4x4 needed. From Imlil, the trek to Ouanoukrim takes longer than the trek to Toubkal. Most climbers take three to four days. The route passes through the scenic Azzaden Valley, past Berber villages, and up to high camps. Many tour operators offer multi-day treks from Marrakech, the stress-free option. They handle transport, guides, mules, accommodation. For most travelers, the best strategy is to join an organized trek. Having a local guide who knows the route is essential. The trails are less marked than the Toubkal route. If driving yourself, fill up on fuel and snacks in Marrakech. There are shops in Imlil, but choices are limited on Morocco trips.

Morocco is generally safe. This area gets far fewer trekkers than Toubkal, but it is still safe. Serious crime is almost nonexistent. Keep your wallet in a front pocket in villages. No hotels on the mountain itself. The best base is Imlil village. Dozens of guesthouses, eco-lodges, and gîtes. Everything from basic dorms to comfortable riads with mountain views. For the summit or multi-day treks, stay in Imlil or a valley gîte. Camping is possible in designated areas. There are no refuge huts on the Ouanoukrim route, so you must camp or stay in gîtes. Book in advance in summer. For most travelers, stay in Imlil the night before your trek. Book ahead in summer and spring when the area is busiest on Morocco trips.
