The mountain was named after the European pioneer John Speke, who never climbed the mountain. It is close to Mount Stanley which is found in its southeast. The climb to Speke begins from the Bujuku hovel and it is such a challenge since there are numerous rocks. When it downpours, it gets indeed more challenging.
