Queen Elizabeth National park receives the highest number of tourists in Uganda and is home to the rare tree climbing lions, a number crater lake and other stunning landscapes. Itinerary

1

Day 1: Pickup from Kampala or Entebbe and Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi.

On this day wake up early in the morning and have breakfast as you wait for the safari guide. The safari guide will brief you about the safari and let you know where to get any equipment or and directs you in case of any cash transactions. The drive to Lake Bunyonyi starts 9 days best Uganda wildlife safari is long but very amazing as it offers our visitors a chance to observe the life in remote Africa. You will view for yourself how the local people go about their daily life different from the traffic jam and busy life in the Kampala city. The south western part of Uganda is endowed with incredible sceneries like lakes, rivers, mountains, indigenous cattle ranches, and forests, national parks, rolling hills, tea plantations and diverse vegetation. Anticipate enjoying the road trip if you’re a nature lover and a keen observer. There will be stopovers at various attractions, monuments and sightings including at the equator crossing for a chance to take photos. Lunch will be served along the way in Mbarara Town before continuing to Lake Bunyonyi.
Upon arrival at Lake Bunyonyi, the safari guide will take you to the lodge for check-in, shower and have some refreshment. You can then set out for a nature walk along the lake shores. Lake Bunyonyi (place of many little birds) is Africa’s second deepest lake after Lake Tanganyika. It is really relatively small but very scenic and surrounded by flourishing environment. The banks of Lake Bunyonyi are covered by terraced hills and forests. They are 29 small islands are found in the lake with some interesting ones which the historical significance like the punishment island and another one which used to be a quarantine Centre for lepers. The lake is free from contamination diseases like bilharzia and crocodiles hence the best for only those who can swim in deep waters. Birders should expect a treat as Lake Bunyonyi is a home to over 200 recorded species.

Day 2: Boatride and Canoeing at Lake Bunyonyi, Transfer to Bwindi for the Batwa cultural walk

Wake up early in the morning and take a walk along the shores of the lake to enjoy the morning sunrise. After breakfast, you will head out for canoeing activity and a visit to the different islands on the lake. The birdlife within and around the lake is so exceptional. Some of the islands are breeding grounds for several bird species. While on the islands, you will be taken to visit the fishing villages, schools and medical centers and experience the lifestyle of the locals.
After 3 to 4 hours of enjoying the stunning lake Bunyonyi, the safari guide will start the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park which is only 2 hours drive. Upon arrival the park, you will be taken to the lodge for check-in and refreshment. In the late afternoon, your safari guide will take you to visit the local Batwa pygmies’ community. The Batwa pygmies’ originally lived in Bwindi impenetrable forest as hunters and fruit gatherers for 1000 years AC. When Bwindi was gazette as a national park, the authorities decided to evict them from the forest. Unfortunately, their resettlement and civilization was not wholly successful. They have never fully adapted to life outside the forest and associate themselves with the modernity. They were introduced to the new and unfamiliar neighbors, lifestyle and economic activities. On your visit, you will be told about the kind of life they lived in while in the forest as opposite to the reality of today. Though some of the Batwa have moved on and are cattle keepers and crop farmers.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking and Transfer to the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park

The briefing for gorilla trekking adventure in Bwindi impenetrable national park starts at 7:30am. It is advisable to wake up earlier in the morning and take your breakfast. You must have picnic packed lunch from the lodge before you set out for the briefing. The briefing is conducted by the park warden. You will be equipped with information about the forest, the gorilla families in that specific sector, what to expect in the forest and how to conduct yourself while with the Mountain Gorillas. Gorilla families in Bwindi will be allocated you based on your overall fitness and age, so make sure your safari guide is informed about your wellbeing. If you wish to engage in the easier or harder trek, inform your safari or the rangers about it during the briefing. Only 1 group of 8 people can trek a particular gorilla group in a day. After the briefing, guests head out in different directions to search for the gentle primates. Gorilla trekking will lead you to the thick tropical rainforest with a chance to see smaller primates, butterflies, rare plants, birds, waterfalls, rivers, valleys streams, and large mammals. Gorilla trekking activity in Bwindi can go for between 2 hours to about 8 hours depending on which gorilla family you are allocated and their location on your trekking day. Each gorilla group gives a different experience. Some Gorilla groups may have more babies or multiple silverbacks hence offer an exceptional interesting experience. Observe as the family members feed, groom, mate, rest and play. The dominant silverback is always observant and alert. Please do not make surprising move that might be taken as a threat. Keep your distance of 10m and avoid direct eye contact. Do not touch a gorilla even when they pass closer to you. After spending one full hour with these gentle primates, you will re set back to the starting point and given your certificate of successful participation. The safari guide will be waiting for you at the starting point to take you back to the lodge for refreshment and checkout before embarking on the drive to the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Day 4: Game drive to see tree climbing lions and Afternoon Boat cruise at the Kazinga Channel

After your early morning breakfast, your safari guide will take you for your game drive at the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park in search for the tree climbing lions. This sector is less explored but is habitat to the largest group of the rare tree climbing lions in the world. The sector also has the highest concentration of the Uganda Kob. The main reason of this game drive is to search for the tree climbing lions of Ishasha and this comes with opportunities to have a glimpse other wildlife species in the park. These lions love resting on the large fig trees which are widely spread in the sector. It is hard to say with proof why the lions in Ishasha love climbing trees compared to other lions in other parts of the park, though one theory is that there are specific insects in Ishasha sector that bite them while resting on the ground.
After spotting the tree climbing lions and other animals, you transfer to northern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park check in at the lodge and have lunch as you wait for the afternoon adventure. Your safari guide will then transfer you to the Kazinga channel for the afternoon launch cruise. The Kazinga channel is a water stream which intersects Lake Albert to Lake George. It has one of the highest concentrations of wildlife species in East Africa. Anticipate seeing Nile crocodiles, Cape buffaloes, hippos, African elephants and adventurous collections of birds like flamingos, malachite kingfishers, papyrus Gonolek, red chest, shoebill stork, pink backed pelicans, water thick-knee, yellow-billed stork yellow crown and many more. The Kazinga Channel connects and it is where most of the park wildlife species gather to drink and bath most especially during the dry seasons.

Day 5: Morning game drive at the Kasenyi Sector and Transfer to Kibale National Park visit the Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary.

Wake up early and head out for the second game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park. This game drive is even more amazing than the first one because of the high numbers of wildlife species and beautiful sceneries. Anticipate spotting crater lakes, lions, African elephants, hyenas, warthogs, Uganda Kobs, leopards, Waterbuck, Topis, buffaloes, black and white Colobus. The game drive adventure goes all the way to the shores of lake Edward were you can see various bird species like the black bee-eater, Cassin’s grey flycatcher, broad billed roller and many more. After the 3 hour game drive adventure, you will embark on the transfer to Kibale National Park with a stopover along the way for lunch. Upon arrival at Kibale forest national park, you will be taken to the lodge for check-in and then after head out for the tour to Bigodi swamp sanctuary. The swamp is home to 12 primate species. Anticipate spotting other animals like sitatungas and antelopes

Day 6: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale Forest National Park Uganda .

Wake up early in the morning and once again have breakfast as you wait for your safari guide to pick you up from the lodge. It is important to come with you picnic packed lunch, will have a very long day out in the dense forest. Chimpanzee habituation begins earlier than normal chimpanzee trekking after briefing at Kanyanchu visitor information center. The arrangement is meant to follow a chimpanzee group from the time they wake up until there nesting time. During the activity, you will have a chance to see various animal species like Red Colobus, Red-tailed monkeys and Grey cheeked Mangabeys, Red-tailed monkeys and many more. Before set out to the rain forest, the experienced Park warden will conduct a briefing you on what to expect and experience. If you love birds and butterflies, you will also enjoy hiking in the dense forest. Kibale forest national park has a population of over 1500 individual chimpanzees. Kibale National Park is the best place to spot chimpanzees worldwide because of its highest concentration for chimpanzee.

Day 7: Transfer to Murchison falls and visit the top of the falls.

Wake up and have a relaxed breakfast. You Safari guide will pick you up after breakfast to embark on the long road trip to the Murchison Falls National Park through Fort Portal town, Hoima city and Masindi town. Enjoy the stunning landscapes, Mount Rwenzori ranges and the countryside with small urban centers. Lunch will be served along the way and upon arrival your safari guide will lead you to the top of the falls visit. Here you will be able to experience river Nile force its way through a 7m narrow gorge down pouring 45m creating a roar.

Day 8: Morning Game drive and Afternoon Launch cruise on the river Nile.

The morning game drive in Murchison falls is meant to allow our guests to see the morning raisers and those retiring back to their dens after a busy night of with prey. This is the best time to see leopards, hyenas and lions. The safari guide will start the game drive at exactly 6:30am. The game drive is done in the northern banks of the River Nile all, and anticipate seeing the Uganda kob, buffaloes, hartebeest, reedbuck, giraffes, waterbucks and many more. After the morning game drive, your safari guide will take you back to the lodge for lunch and some refreshment. In the afternoon, you will set out for a boat cruise along the river Nile towards the bottom of Murchison falls. Anticipate seeing hippos and Nile crocodiles and birds including bee- eaters, Egyptian geese, cormorants, goliath heron, rare shoebill stork and saddle-bill stork.

Day 9: Visit the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and Transfers to Kampala or Entebbe.

Have a relaxed breakfast. Your safari guide will come to pick you and start your drive back to kampala or Entebbe. A long the way, the safari guide will branch for 2 hours towards Ziwa Rhino sanctuary for rhino trekking. You will be received by the ranger guide who will brief you about the Centre and the activity. The Ziwa Rhino sanctuary was gazetted to protect the remaining Rhinos and help them in breeding until their numbers are enough to allow for reintroduction to the wild.
